WHY VISIT

During the site preparation construction process for the new Seoul City Hall in 2008, a large number of structural remains and artifacts presumed to be from the Joseon Dynasty were identified, leading to an excavation investigation. Here, various artifacts such as ceramics, coins, and roof tiles were excavated alongside structural remains like building sites and stone revetments constructed during the modern era and the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, many weapons from the Joseon Dynasty were identified, including Chongtong (gun barrels), Cheolhwan (iron cannonballs), and the Bullanggi Japo (breech-loading swivel gun) designated as a Treasure. As a result of investigating old maps and related materials, it was determined that Gungisi, a government office in charge of manufacturing weapons during the Joseon Dynasty, was located near Seoul City Hall. The Seoul City Hall site is presumed to have been part of the past Gungisi, and the Gungisi Relics Exhibition Hall was created to preserve related structural remains and exhibit excavated artifacts.
