Mandy El-Sayegh : For Theresa

WHY VISIT

Space K Seoul, Kolon’s cultural art sharing space, hosts the solo exhibition "For Theresa" by Mandy El-Sayegh (b.1985), who is based in London. Born in Malaysia with Palestinian and Chinese heritage, the artist has developed unique archival installation works using data collection and editing methods based on the 'outsider's perspective' she experienced while growing up in Western society. Mandy El-Sayegh questions what the institutionalized systems of knowledge and classification systems that have defined our world have excluded and what they have naturalized. In particular, for this exhibition, she extensively incorporates printed materials such as old maps, calligraphy, and banknotes that she directly collected while visiting museums, old bookstores, and flea markets in Korea. Through the archival techniques of collection and classification, she traces the political implications of how such material traces have contributed to the accumulation and maintenance of power.
