The Records of this Place at that Time - Cheonggyecheon Shanty Town

WHY VISIT

The exhibition features over 80 photographs of Cheonggyecheon shantytowns and their residents, captured by photographers Kuwabara Shisei, Nomura Motoyuki, and Hong Soon-tae, and held in the collections of the Seoul Museum of History and Cheonggyecheon Museum. Divided into three sections, the exhibition provides a photographic glimpse into the diverse scenes of Cheonggyecheon’s shantytowns from the 1960s to the 1970s. Part 1, “Scenes of the Shantytown,” showcases images of the shantytown around Cheonggyecheon and the huts in the lower area during the 1970s. Part 2, “People of the Shantytown,” portrays the residents' daily lives. Part 3, “Demolition and Overpass,” highlights the displacement of shantytown communities due to Cheonggyecheon’s redevelopment and the construction of the new overpass. You are invited to take a meaningful journey to reflect on the lives of Cheonggyecheon’s former residents, now transformed by urban development.
