YMCA Seoul : A Civic History Shaped by Youth

WHY VISIT

Every year, the Gongpyeong Historic Sites Museum (26, Ujeongguk-ro, Jongno-gu) hosts a special exhibition that highlights the history and significance of the Jongno area. This year marks the museum’s seventh special exhibition, spotlighting the story of YMCA Seoul, which began in the heart of Jongno. The exhibition traces the YMCA’s 120-year journey, offering an in-depth look at its role in Korea’s modern history, particularly in education, civil society, and sports. Part 1 covers the founding of the YMCA, the construction of its headquarters, and its involvement in nationalist movements during the Japanese occupation period. Part 2 focuses on post-liberation civic movements, while Part 3 presents the introduction and development of everyday sports in modern Korea through photographs, blueprints, publications, and various other materials.
