WHY VISIT

Forming a relationship begins with sensing the subject. Among these senses, sight, or our eyes’ path, is the easiest and fastest way to establish a relationship. A gaze that doesn't stray from everyday life is conducive to forming connections. However, if the subject is unfamiliar, desire becomes entwined with the gaze. To start a relationship with that subject, one might actively explore it, desperately avoid forming a connection, or even experience frustration in their desire. In this exhibition, invited artists Manwook (b.1975) and Kimi Jaak (b.1976) discuss their respective ways of forming relationships based on their deep contemplation of unfamiliar subjects that have long held their attention. The results of their gazes are fundamentally different. In the case of artist Manwook, an active exploration of the subject ultimately leads to the erasure of boundaries with the unfamiliar subject. On the other hand, the unfamiliar gaze of artist Kimi Jaak results in narratives that revolve around and observe from the periphery, unable to be integrated.
