Jeju Island 3-Day Itinerary: Volcanoes, Beaches & Haenyeo

Jeju is Korea's volcanic island paradise — a UNESCO triple heritage site (natural, cultural, and intangible) that sits just 55 minutes south of Seoul by plane. No visa required for most nationalities. Renting a car is essential to see the best of the island.

Getting to Jeju

By air: From Seoul (Gimpo GMP): 55 min, from ₩35,000 (budget, one-way). From Busan (PUS): 50 min. Jeju has its own airport (CJU) with domestic and some international flights.

Accommodation: Jeju City (north) for central access, or Seogwipo (south) for proximity to southern coastal attractions. A car is essential — staying in one area and driving is the most efficient approach.

Car rental: From ₩35,000–₩80,000/day. International Driver's License accepted. Book ahead in summer peak season.

Day 1: East Jeju — Sunrise Peak & Lava Caves

Pre-Dawn: Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise (05:30–08:00)

The "Sunrise Peak" — a 182m volcanic crater rising dramatically from the sea on Jeju's eastern tip. The sunrise view from the rim is one of Korea's most iconic natural spectacles.

• Drive from Jeju City (~45 min) to arrive by 05:30 (check sunrise time for your travel date)
• 99 stone steps up to the rim; easy climb (~20 min)
• Entry: ₩2,000 adults
• Best: April–October when sunrise is early enough; Winter sunrises are after 07:30

Post-sunrise breakfast: The village at the base of Seongsan has small restaurants open from 06:30 serving haemul ttukbaegi (spicy seafood stew) — a classic Jeju morning meal.

Morning: Udo Island Day Trip (09:00–13:00)

Take the 15-minute ferry from Seongido Ferry Terminal to Udo Island (우도, Cow Island) — a tiny island off Jeju's east coast.

• Rent an electric scooter or bicycle at the ferry dock (₩7,000–₩15,000)
• Hagosudong Beach: Coral sand beach with turquoise water unique to Jeju
• Gyeonu Village: A working haenyeo (female diver) village — watch the divers come ashore with their catch
• Biyang Peak: 30-min hike to the island's volcanic cone for views across to Seongsan

Ferries run hourly; last return ferry around 18:00.

Afternoon: Manjanggul Lava Tube (14:30–16:00)

One of the world's longest lava tubes — formed 250,000 years ago when the Hallasan volcano was active. The accessible public section (1km) maintains a cool 11°C year-round.

• Bring a jacket regardless of outside temperature
• A single lamp post near the 7m-high lava column at the end makes a dramatic photo
• Entry: ₩4,000 adults

Nearby: Seongeup Folk Village — a living traditional village with thatched houses, dolharubang (stone grandfather statues), and artisan workshops. Free entry.

Evening: East Jeju Seafood Dinner

Jeju black pork (흑돼지): The island's signature dish — dark-skinned heritage pigs raised outdoors. The most famous restaurant street is in Jeju City's Heuk Dwaegi Geori (Black Pig Street). Expect ₩15,000–₩20,000 per person for a full BBQ set.

Day 2: Hallasan Volcano Hike

Full Day: Hallasan National Park (06:00–16:00)

Korea's highest peak (1,950m) and the centerpiece of Jeju's UNESCO Natural World Heritage designation. The summit crater contains a lake (Baengnokdam) visible only on clear days.

Trail options:

• Eorimok Trail (5.3km, ~2hr up): Most popular. Starts at Eorimok Ranger Station (west side). Ends at Witseoreum shelter — does NOT reach the summit.
• Seongpanak Trail (9.6km, ~3.5hr up): The only trail reaching the summit crater. Starts on the east side (5.16 Road). You must depart by 12:00 (earlier in winter) to reach the top by the 13:30 cutoff.
• Yeongsil Trail (3.7km): Shortest, most scenic — through twisted juniper forests. Ends at Baerokdam shelter.

What to bring: Packed lunch (no food sold above treeline), water (2L minimum), layers, hiking poles (optional but helpful). Wear proper shoes — the summit trail is rocky.

Hallasan Booking: The Seongpanak–Summit trail requires a free online reservation through the Hallasan National Park website (hallasan.go.kr). Book at least 2 weeks in advance in peak season.

Evening: Seogwipo City

Spend the night in Seogwipo — Jeju's southern city with a charming waterfall (Cheonjiyeon, free), night market, and the best restaurants for Jeju gamgyul (tangerine) soju cocktails.

Day 3: South & West Jeju — Beaches & Coastal Trails

Morning: Seopjikoji (09:00–11:00)

A 2km coastal walking trail on Jeju's southeastern tip — past stone walls, volcanic rock formations, and canola fields (spectacular in April). The peninsula's famous lighthouse and reed grass fields were featured in multiple Korean films.

Nearby: Camellia Hill (동백수목원) — 6,000 camellia trees in bloom (November–March). A hidden gem with a Japanese-village-style layout.

Late Morning: Hyeopjae Beach (11:30–13:30)

Jeju's most beautiful swimming beach on the west coast — emerald-turquoise water over white sand with volcanic Biyangdo Island visible offshore. Best swimming beach on the island in summer.

Grab grilled seafood from the beachside restaurants for lunch (₩20,000–₩35,000 for a set menu).

Afternoon: Hallim Park & Bijarim Forest (14:00–17:00)

Hallim Park (협재·쌍굴): Botanical gardens built over two connected lava tubes. The subtropical plants growing inside the cave tunnels create a surreal atmosphere. Entry: ₩12,000.

Bijarim Forest (비자림): A 448,000㎡ forest of 2,800 nutmeg trees, some over 800 years old. The 45-minute loop trail through the canopy is one of Jeju's best nature walks (free entry).

Evening: Return to Jeju City & Airport

Jeju Airport: Allow 1 hour before departure for check-in and security. The airport has Korean food restaurants in the departures terminal — try Jeju's famous tangerine soft-serve ice cream (gamgyul softe) before you fly.
